![]() It seems to be assumed that all guys value sexuality over relationship and commitment. My book, Aetna Rising, comes out of the frustration that I have felt with the cultural thinking about guys in our society. That piqued my interest, because part of the push for writing the science fiction novel I just published was very similar to Díaz' motivation for writing This Is How You Lose Her. ![]() At one point he asks Inskeep, "But look - bro, are you telling me that if I get all the women of the United States and gather them all together and say do you highly recommend American men, that you're going to get like a sterling recommendation? That these women are going to be like, 'Oh yes! American men are fantastic. ![]() Díaz says that he was never encouraged as a young boy by the culture around him to see women as fully human. Díaz' conversation with Steve Inskeep caught my attention. First I heard his interview on Morning Edition on NPR. ![]() I ended up reading Junot Díaz' book This Is How You Lose Her because I heard about Díaz twice in the same day. ![]() ![]() ![]() In this bold retelling of the ancient legendpresented for the first time in graphic novel formgraphic novelist Andrew Winegarner revitalizes the ultimate adventure story. "With all the graphic adaptations of mythology flying around, it’s about time someone got to old Gilgamesh. ![]() ![]() The main character of The Witcher (alternative translation: The Hexer) is Geralt, a mutant assassin who has been trained since childhood to hunt down and destroy monsters. This cycle and his many other works have made him one of the best-known fantasy authors in Poland in the 1990s. ![]() Sapkowski has created a cycle of tales based on the world of The Witcher, comprising three collections of short stories and five novels. His first short story, The Witcher ( Wiedźmin), was published in Fantastyka, Poland's leading fantasy literary magazine, in 1986 and was enormously successful both with readers and critics. The main character’s inner thoughts to herself were just as amusing as when she was speaking. You can tell while reading it that her writing has most definitely improved along the years. This is Mariana Zapata’s newest book, not counting the one that hasn’t been released yet. This book had me rolling in little fits of laughter. ![]() After years of insulting and jabbing at each other they will have to learn to get along enough to trust each other on the ice. ![]() Only one problem, Jasmine and Ivan can’t stand each other. Be his partner for a year to get the gold she wants, and afterwards he’ll help her find another partner. ![]() She has worked hard, but because of her honesty no one wants to work with her, until Ivan, the star of figure skating, brings her an offer. Jasmine career in figure skating is about to come to a close with nothing but bad partnerships to show for it. He is jaded because he was unceremoniously dumped by the man he’d been living with for eight years. That Henry is slow to recognize Reed’s interest in him is understandable because, for most of the rest of the world, he has to look deeper. And how much better would the world be if we were all like Reed? Honest, self-effacing, and caring of others? ![]() Usually I like to get the perspective of the other hero, but as Reed’s co-worker Emily says, Reed is incapable of lying. ‘The Weight of It All’ is entirely from Henry’s point-of-view and that worked. So when ‘A Very Henry Christmas: The Weight of It All 1.5’ was suddenly released, I seized the opportunity to listen to the beginning of the Henry and Reed story again before reading about their Christmas antics.
